SmiteWorks Annual Report 2011

Sales Data

Despite the continued global recession, last year (2011) saw only a 6.7% dip in sales from our all-time high in 2010. Our 2011 sales figures still outperformed our 2009 and earlier years sales.  Our total license sales are down dramatically from 2009 numbers, but are being replaced by more and more Ultimate licenses.  Products sold in 36 countries last year, with the most sales coming from USA, UK, Canada, Germany, France and then Australia.

Sales Figures (Quantity and $ Amount). This is from sales on the Fantasy Grounds website only.  Some additional sales come from RPGNow and DriveThruRPG but they don't significantly change the sales picture for the year.

How did we fare on our goals for 2010 and 2011?

Our main goals were to add more content and improve the core functionality of the system. I think we accomplished that quite well. We added more publishers over both years and we continued to grow our user base. Piracy became a bit of a problem as we started to see more and more cracked versions of our core product and we use these sales to fund additional development. We've started to take more action to combat this but it will require an ongoing effort.

Another major goal was to get the community more involved in development of new content (rulesets, adventures, map packs, etc.) This has worked fairly well but mostly in the conversion of material from known publishers. I still think there is a larger market for this in new content creation as well. Due to licensing issues, this is best suited for the D20/OGL market.

Finally, we wanted to get in with one of the major D&D publishers -- either Paizo or WoTC, or both. Despite numerous attempts and some seemingly good conversations, this never materialized. We haven't given up hope yet though and will keep pursuing these initiatives.

Goals for 2012

  1. Cement a license from Wizards of the Coast or Paizo
  2. Complete Mutants & Masterminds from Green Ronin and continue to expand our product offerings there
  3. Add more content and features to existing rulesets (Savage Worlds, Call of Cthulhu, etc.)
  4. Bring older rulesets into feature parity with D&D 4E and 3.5E product offerings
  5. Build support for D&D 5E
  6. Build better integration with third party tools and websites (Obsidian Portal, Hero Lab, Google+)
